Hot Fun in the Summertime

Here Comes the Sun

We’re about half way through Bonnaroo 2010. It’s hard to believe, but time flies when you’re having fun.

Yesterday was sweltering, and today is even hotter. We’re now officially at the point when water, sunscreen and shade cease to be optional and become necessary for survival.

We were able to make it out to see tons of great performances yesterday. Tenacious D played the What Stage and gave a rocking performance. I overheard more than a half dozen people say that Jack Black is one of the best front men in Rock n Roll. One thing is certain, he knows how to own a crowd and give a stellar performance. They even played their tribute to the late Ronnie James Dio, and found time to do a medley of covers by the Who, many of which Jack forgot the words to, but none of the 45,000 or so that watched the set seemed to mind. I know I didn’t.

A few of us also caught the set by The National and we all came away extremely impressed. Tori Amos also played and was on point. Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros and Dr. Dog also gave stellar performances throughout yesterday and last night.

After doing some work and enjoying an adult beverage mixed by none other than Chris Thile, formerly of Nickel Creek, now with Punch Brothers (Chris can mix, too!) we set off for the midnight sets…..

Lt. Dan, Wells and I were able to find a spot on scaffolding behind the fence next to Which Stage to see last night’s Flaming Lips set. So not only were we able to sit, we had a bird’s eye view of the 40,000 or so fans that created a sea of people. One would have a hard time arguing that Wayne Coyne is not one of the premier visionaries on the planet when it comes to designing a live show, and last night did not disappoint. After playing 90 minutes of the Lips hits, the band returned to play Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” in its entirety.

Hammel was able to catch The Black Keys (who also started at midnight) and said it was a stellar show. The Black Keys will be at Ryman on August 12.

After the Flaming Lips and Black Keys, I met up with Hammel to catch hip-hop artist B.O.B. He was scheduled to start at 3:00am but began 25 minutes late. Anytime an act is 25 minutes late, said act had better come out with a vengeance – and that is exactly what he did.

Today, I got a chance to catch Brandi Carlile at That Tent and WOW. What an amazing talent. Brandi and her band were fantastic. This is Brandi’s first time playing at Bonnaroo. We’re trying to get Brandi for an interview later today. If (fingers crossed) it happens, check back here for the goods.

Stay cool campers!
Cheers

Saturday at Bonnaroo 2010!!!

We have two days left of Backstage craziness. Avett Brothers and Nortec Collective have already been here and a band called, Truth & Salvage, is performing right now. They have some amazing harmonies! I haven’t heard of them yet but that isn’t the first time I have discovered a band here!

We are pretty sure that when John Prine comes over this afternoon, Old Crow Medicine Show, will be backing him! We are also getting, Mumford and Sons! They popped in before dropping off their gear and heading over to the Lunar stage to watch the Fifa World Cup! The crowd over there is going to be insane!

We also have the Dead Weather popping by the studio for a quick interview!!!

Brandi Carlile, Caitlin Rose, and Dave Rawlings Machine will be popping by as well!

Wish me luck! I’ll post the interviews here when possible.

Bonnaroo Friday

Good Day Sunshine

So it ended up being more of an early morning than a late night. But that’s ok. After all, it is Bonnaroo.

After catching a bit of Mayer Hawthorne & the County, I came back to the Radio Compound to meet up with Lt. Dan to see The XX, Lotus and Joshua James. The energy of each act on stage was matched only by the energy in the crowd at each show.

Lt. Dan and I met some very nice folks from as far away as Chicago and as close as Manchester. Random? Yes. Surprising? No. After all, it’s Bonnaroo. In fact the young lady we met from Chicago spent 18 hours driving and waiting in line to get to “Bonnaroo – the best place on Earth”. She didn’t even know the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup?! (GO HAWKS!)

Dan and I also spent some time hanging out with the guys from Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. Great guys – great band.

Hammel got back from Radio Bonnaroo 101.5 and we were more than happy to close the compound. At about 4:30am.

It’s warm today. It was warm yesterday. Even warmer today. (You either know or need an explanation. Either way, it’s ok.)

Just so you know, Trombone Shorty and his band will melt your face off. Stellar is the word that comes to mind. What a show!

Just popped in to the radio compound to tell you all about it, and look who showed up.

Anyhoo, heading out to see Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Damian Marley & Nas, Dr. Dog, Tenacious D, Kings of Leon and, um, more….

The first person to send an e-mail to jayson@wrlt.com with the the hip-hop artist’s name I mispronounced on the air yesterday gets a Lightning 100 swag bag.

Stay tuned boys and girls….

Friday at Bonnaroo 2010!!!

Friday is here and the day is flying by already! We have twelve bands on the books today. Our morning started with the, Carolina Chocolate Drops at 9am. They were dressed to impress and sounded amazing. A wonderful way to wake up and start the day.

Chris Thile and his band, Punch Brothers, dropped by at 10am. They were really decked out, wearing some snazzy suits! They performed with only two microphones in the Grand Ole Opry style! Very fun!

PUNCH BROTHERS

The band, Dawes, came over at 11am, to show off their brotherly harmonies! Their have an album out on ATO Records, which they recorded without any computers. They also have a pretty cool fan named, Bill Murray! In their interview they told a great story about wild Bill!

Bonnaroo 2010 – Thursday

The Long and Winding Road

It’s a right of passage; the back road trek to the farm in Manchester. We made the journey this morning and after long lines of cars and Bonnaroovians, victory is ours!

Evidently, Manchester got rain yesterday; a lot of it. Some vehicles had to wait to drive on site until sand and gravel could be brought in to avoid them sinking in the mud. (There is lots of that, too).

After arriving at the Radio Compound, I got a chance to see some of The Non-Commissioned Officers set, Fanfarlo and Diane Birch. The night is still young and I’m hoping to find a magical way to see Local Natives, Manchester Orchestra, Mayer Hawthorne & the County and Wale.

If you are making the trek to the farm, don’t forget rain boots, sunblock and baby wipes. (Yes, baby wipes may just be the secret to Bonnaroo!)

It will most likely be a late night (or perhaps an early morning). Check back tomorrow for lots more, including an interview with The Non-Commissioned Officers and an exclusive backstage performance by Joshua James. Game On!

For now – Cheers!

Thursday at Bonnaroo!!!

We are rocking here in the backstage at Bonnaroo studios! I’ll add information to the blog as time permits today. Temper Trap just came through the studios for a quick performance and interview. I can only post the interviews on the blog but I am also podcasting everything in the itunes store. Just search for Lt. Dan Buckley. I haven’t uploaded any of the interviews yet to the ftp server, but keep your eye out and they should start showing up soon.

Our first band of the day / year came over at 2pm. They are called, The Constellations and came from Atlanta, Georgia. They are a party band with a reputation for music!

Here is a link to the Constellations interview:

Day 9: Gabby’s – Mary’s Notes

The International Culinary Tourism Association defines a destination restaurant as a “restaurant so interesting, different or special that people travel just to eat there.” If sitting in the middle of one of Nashville’s last remaining dead zones, within city limits, doesn’t automatically qualify a place to claim that distinction, then perhaps Gabby’s Burgers & Fries has enough of its own bizarre charm to carry it over the threshold.

Situated a block or few down Chestnut past Greer Stadium, the building that houses Gabby’s reminds me of the makeshift cabins my friends and I sometimes fell across while exploring the woods of the Adirondack foothills. A base. Some two-by-fours covered over with the thinnest plywood imaginable. This shack takes it further by slapping a coat of paint on, adding a few tables, and hanging photos of country stars, probably leftovers from the days when the building housed Hap Townes, a legendary meat & three. Higgins and I have written of some places as divey, with cheap wood paneling. What separates these places, as classic burger joints, from Gabby’s is that the more typical operation tries to hide the cheap surroundings by dimming the lights. Gabby’s waves its freak flag high, in florescent glory.  On with the meat.

Juiciness: 3. Gabby’s didn’t fare well here. It probably didn’t help that it was a five ounce patty, squished thin.

Flavor: 7. In spite of the dryness – and I don’t know if it would have made a difference if I’d ordered medium rare, as I wasn’t asked how I wanted it – the hand-formed patty was plenty tasty.

Attractiveness: 7. With the small size, the burger did threaten to get smothered in bun but overall it was a nice package. .

Atmosphere: Eeeeesh. Tough call. I’m still not sure if it’s so awful it’s great, or if it’s just plain awful. The people behind the counter are a treat, though, absolutely. Staying neutral. 5.

Digestivity – a little after-burgerness is lingering, but not bad. 8.

Overall experience – 7. This is a place I’d return to, especially if I wanted to avoid certain people. And I would return for a burger at least once, to see if I could get it a little less well-done.
